Did You Know?

Gabriel Prosser organized a rebellion of over 1,000 enslaved people in Richmond, Virginia in 1800. He was a skilled blacksmith who forged his own weapons. He was betrayed and executed but never broke under interrogation.

The Story of Gabriel Prosser

Born around 1776, Gabriel was an enslaved man hired out as a blacksmith in Richmond, Virginia. Skilled, literate, and deeply aware of the revolutionary ideals being proclaimed around him, Gabriel became convinced that enslaved people had every right to fight for freedom — and began to plan.

Over months of careful organizing, Gabriel recruited over a thousand enslaved people from across the Richmond area. He forged swords and bayonets in his blacksmith shop, planned supply chains, and designated military roles. His plan: march on Richmond, take the armory, capture Governor James Monroe, and force the Virginia legislature to end slavery.

On the night of August 30, 1800, two enslaved men betrayed the plot. Torrential rains that night made movement impossible. Gabriel was captured weeks later hiding on a ship, tried, and hanged on October 10, 1800.

He refused to confess or name his co-conspirators. Governor Monroe reportedly said Gabriel "seemed to have made up his mind to die, and to have resolved to say but little on the subject." His rebellion planted terror in Virginia's slaveholding class and contributed directly to increasingly brutal slave codes — and to the growing resistance that would eventually end slavery.
