Did You Know?

Toussaint L'Ouverture defeated the armies of France, Spain, and Britain simultaneously — the only enslaved person in history to lead a successful national liberation.

The Story of Toussaint L'Ouverture

Born into slavery around 1743, Toussaint L'Ouverture taught himself to read, studied military strategy, and in 1791 joined the Haitian Revolution. His tactical brilliance quickly elevated him to commander, and he built a disciplined army from formerly enslaved people who had little military training.

What followed was unprecedented: over the next decade, Toussaint's forces defeated the Spanish army, repelled a massive British invasion (at the cost of 25,000 British soldiers — the largest British military defeat up to that point), and forced Napoleon's France to negotiate.

He drafted a constitution in 1801 that declared Haiti an autonomous French protectorate with himself as Governor-for-Life — effectively ending slavery on the island. Napoleon, threatened by the example Haiti set for enslaved people in French territories, sent his brother-in-law with 80,000 troops to retake the island.

Toussaint was captured by treachery in 1802 and died in a cold French prison in 1803. But the revolution he built could not be stopped. Haiti declared independence on January 1, 1804 — the first free Black nation in the Americas and the first nation born of a slave revolt in world history.
